Snow-dusted mountains rising over a highland glen

CAIRNGORMS NATIONAL PARK, SCOTLAND

Raven's Craig Lodge

A stone-built highland lodge of firelight, malt whisky, and big empty hills. Six rooms, one long table, and the dark outside your window.

The lodge

Built for the hills, kept for the fire

Raven's Craig stands on a shoulder of moor above Aviemore, with the Cairngorm plateau filling the windows. Days here run on weather and daylight: up the hill at dawn, back for soup at noon, whisky by the fire when the light goes.

Whisky lounge

The fire is lit at four

A large stone fireplace in a timber lodge A bottle of single malt whisky

From October to April the lounge fire is lit at four every afternoon and burns until the last guest gives up. The shelf holds around sixty malts, most of them distilled within fifty miles of the lodge.

Supper is one sitting at the long table at seven: soup, something from the hill or the river, and pudding. Vegetarians eat as well as everyone else, which is to say very well.

  • Guided tastings on Friday nights through winter
  • Drying room for boots and waterproofs
  • Packed lunches for early hill days

On the doorstep

The hill decides the day

Three ways to spend it, all starting at the garden gate.

A mountain burn dropping as a waterfall

Onto the hill

Marked paths leave from the gate: the loch circuit at two hours, the shoulder of the high tops for a full day, and the old stalkers' path along the burn. We lend maps, flasks, and blunt advice about the weather.

The Milky Way over a dark sky

Dark skies

The Cairngorms hold some of the darkest skies in Britain. On clear winter nights the Milky Way runs wall to wall over the garden. Blankets and a telescope wait by the back door.

Snow-covered forest ridge in the Cairngorms

Winter white

The ski slopes are twenty minutes up the road when the snow comes. The drying room swallows boots overnight, and the fire is always lit when you get back down.

Guest book

What the hill gives back

"Arrived in rain, woke to the whole glen white. The fire was already lit and somebody had left our boots by it."

"We came for two nights and stayed for five. The Friday tasting alone was worth the drive up."
